What problem are you trying to fix?
Write down the symptom before deciding on a replacement. Examples include difficult operation, damaged glass, worn hardware, a deteriorated frame or water appearing after rainfall. Include when it happens and photographs where useful. This gives the assessor something more specific to investigate than “the window is old.”
Ask whether repair, hardware service or replacement is appropriate for the identified problem. Request the reasons for the recommendation, the available product information and the limits of any proposed repair. If replacement is chosen, keep the investigation record with the quote so another bidder can assess the same problem.

How should a leak affect the scope?
Ask the contractor to identify the suspected entry path and what evidence supports it. Do not assume a window replacement includes correction of every moisture problem near the opening. If well or drainage work is recommended, ask for that scope separately enough that you can understand what changes and why.
A quote should make its warranty boundaries understandable. Ask what the product warranty covers, what the installation warranty covers, who responds to a problem and which existing conditions are excluded. Keep written terms with the model number and installation record.
